Visibility

“…everything that becomes visible is light.” Ephesians 5:14 NRSV

The writer of Malachi paints such a vivid picture when he writes, by the power of the Holy Spirit, these words, “You shall go out like leaping calves from the stall” (5:14) Being brought up on a dairy farm, I can see the glee of my Dad’s calves as they were allowed to run free. The pen no longer contained them and they could kick up their heels in the larger space that Dad provided for them.

Think of yourself as that calf who is contained in the stall. You can see the world outside, but cannot take part in it. You are in darkness and the light is not yet visible. But then, one day you realize that certain things are holding you captive and the light begins to shine. When visibility comes it dispels the darkness and you can step out into the light.

The darkness that I am referring to is the inability to hear God’s voice…there is too much noise…noise that is caused by your thoughts that are unrelated to those of God. Isaiah writes, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.” (Isaiah 55:8)

Just recently I found myself in trouble. I needed some very important papers, but they were locked in our safe and I couldn’t find the combination. My husband and I looked in every conceivable place to no avail. We searched and then we searched again. I was beginning to become frantic. We even called a locksmith and made an appointment to come and crack our safe. He told us to keep looking and if we found it to give him a call and he would cancel our appointment. I said to him, “Maybe God will show us where it is.” He said, “He hoped so.” The darkness for me was becoming unbearable.

I prayed, “Please Lord I know you know where the combination is, please tell me.” But then, I went right on fusing and fretting, that is, until the very last minute. God finally got through all the noise in my head. It was like a light bulb being turned on! I had looked in the place where I found the combination the day before, but didn’t see it. But there it was, under some other papers, as big as life. God’s light dispelled the darkness. I felt like the calves that had been let out of their stall. God had mercy upon us and cast His light that the envelope with the combination became visible. I felt like I had risen from the dead and was alive once again! To God be the glory, praise His Holy name.

We called and cancelled our appointment with the safe cracker. Again I was amazed! The first words out of his mouth was, “Praise God!” What a testimony!

Perhaps, there is something confining you and you are walking in darkness. God’s promise is that He will cause His light to shine upon you—all you need to do is ask and then listen has He speaks to your soul. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5, 6) With God you will always have great visibility. He will show you in His time.

Dear Father, open my eyes that I may see glimpses of truth. Have mercy upon me, for I am a sinner. In Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN
